  • OUR STORY

    We founded GG in September 2014 as a facebook group, with the support of ideabox Myanmar. Within a week, the number of members increased to 50. All of them are women in technology; students, professionals, entrepreneurs and self learners. In October 2014, GG was officially launched at the Connected Women's Conference 2014. Today, we are formed with core members and over 800 facebook members.

    Meet-ups & gatherings are designed to welcome the new members,to inspire and engage our members in the tech community with panels and speakers that cover topics related to women in tech, entrepreneurship & leadership

     

    Geek Girls workshops & trainings teach both technical, business related and career-building skills.


    The Barcamp Yangon 2016

    Biggest tech event of the year!

    January 30th 2016

    This is the second time Geek Girls participated in Barcamp Yangon and we loved it. Our topic for the audience of 30 was "Women in Tech” and we discussed about the life after college for tech girls, what it’s like to work in Tech industry and what they can achieve, with the help of our passionate Women in Tech idols as examples. We also informed them about Geek Girls Events where they can network, meet mentors, energetic and like-minded friends to collaborate and develop their skill sets.     The Evolution of Myanmar Fonts

    As the very first 2016 event of Geek Girls Myanmar, we successfully conducted a small seminar about : The Evolution of Myanmar Font”. At the event, Speakers U Zaw Htut from myanmars,net and Ma Thin Zar Phyo from Myanmar Text to Speech shared information and knowledge and answered tech-related unicode questions from the audience of 50.

    We are thankful to the speakers for their time and effort and to the audience for actively participating.

    We've organised 6 workshops, three Meet Ups and engaged in a lot of Facebook activities including Women in Tech of the Month Features.The members have increased from 300 to over 800 with page likes over 2,900 and growing.

    This month, GeekGirlsMM is bringing up the rocky title “Ruby on Rails” with one day hands-on workshop. The idea is to get to know about Ruby on Rails and learn about developing web framework.The course will be delivered by Mike Myat Min Han, CTO of Rebbiz.(one of the well- known leading startups in Myanmar, which created MyanmarCarsDB, MyanmarJobsDB and MyanmarHouseDB).

    It was a beautiful evening, happening at Sule Tech. The talk session "Empowering Women & Rural Population with Tech" led by Ms. Pwint Htun (Management Consultant at leading Technology companies and the World Bank) and the honourable guest speakers Ben Slivka & Lisa Slivka who worked at Microsoft in 90's for many years.     The second meet up occurred again at the Gusto Cafe that is a good place for Geek Girls to gather, reminding of our first meet-up. Unlike the previous gathering, we included the inspirational talks by our board members ; Daw Chaw Khin Khin (MCC), Ma Cho Zin Wint (Myanmar High Society) & Ma Khin Mrat Noe (Sundew Myanmar), followed with the panel discussion about "As a woman working in tech industry, what would you do to make Myanmar women’s life better with technology?”

     

    It was a wonderful evening, seeing the new young members.

    After three weeks of starting the community, we made it happen to meet up for very first time at Gusto Cafe. 30 members turned up and we did have a good time with bonding & sharing session, got to know each other well with their tech background.

    March was full of activities!

    Geek Girls Myanmar participated in a panel discussion " Promoting Women in STEM and Business" and give presentation at the International Women's day event, both held at American Centre. and we also gave a presentation to the students at International School Yangon.

    Winners of the recent Business Solutions Hackathon

    Geek Girls, Honey Mya Win and Shwe Yee were part of Team Ace' that won the Business Solutions Hackathon for designing a web and mobile app to streamline logistics for food delivery service Fresco.

     

    As winner of the challenge, their app will be implemented by Fresco.

    Flood Relief

    During the flooding disaster in August, Geek Girls raised 1,200,000 MMK and donated at Bago division,Thayaw village of 2,000 habitant. We also created a website connecting the many donation groups with the affected areas and silmultaneously sharing updated and reliable news.Photos here

    Start Up Challenge Phandeeyar

    Another good news for 2015!

    On Novmber 22nd, the team Technoholicz, made up of five members, won Honourable Mention Awards. "Their business "Ladycraft" sells, handicrafts made by Myanmar women, online as well as to retailers." said Honey Mya Win, the team leader who is also a core member of Geek Girls Myanmar. The team, passionate about women empowerment,spent many hours on the project despite having jobs. Right now, they are working hard to make this a reality by finding investors and handicraft partners.
